Bike Safety
What You Can Do as a Parent

  • Make sure the helmet fits properly: covers the forehead, straps are snug, it is pleasing to the wearer and is comfortable.

  • Young children may ride in a rear-mounted seat when the neck is strong enough to hold up the head with a helmet and they can sit well unsupported.

  • Do not carry infants in backpacks or front pack while riding a bicycle. These children are too young to be on a bicycle.

  • Be an example and wear a helmet yourself.

  • Praise and consistency will help children wear their helmet at all times

  • Make sure the bike is the right size, not one to "grow in". Oversized bikes are especially dangerous. Young riders may not have enough control of the bike to get out of danger.

MOST IMPORTANT RULES

  1. Wear a helmet at all times

  2. Ride with traffic even on the sidewalk, it's where drivers expect to see you.

  3. Stop and look both ways before entering the street

  4. Stop at all intersections, marked and unmarked

  5. Use hand signals and look left, right and left again

  6. Don't ride at night until the child is much older
