Choking and Poisoning
What You Can Do as a Parent
-
Round
and hard foods are especially dangerous. For
example: hot dogs, nuts, raisins, hard
candies, raw carrots, grapes and popcorn. Do
not feed your children these foods until
they are able to chew efficiently.
-
Use a no-choke tube or golf
ball to determine if an object or food item
is small enough. Remember, the throat is
smaller than the mouth.
-
Learn the Heimlich maneuver.
Do not interfere if a child can cough, speak
or breathe.
-
Mr. Yuk has proven to be
attractive to children under 3. DO NOT use
this sticker on poisonous or dangerous
substances.
-
Choose a child's food
carefully, use adequate supervision during
meals, sit quietly while eating. Encourage
children to talk with an empty mouth.
-
Be careful what you read.
According to an article in the Journal of
Pediatrics
and Child Health, there is an alarming
amount of inaccurate information about
children's foods in books, magazines and
pamphlets aimed at parents and caregivers.
