Creating Fun Physical Activity
What You Can Do as a Parent

  • Consider how children learn couch potato skills. Become aware of and take responsibility for yourself as a model of physical activity for children.

  • Remember when selecting movement activities, fun always needs to be the main goal.

  • Create choices that children can do by themselves, with friends and with family:

    • Children by themselves can:
Dance to kids music    Practice somersaults    Pretend to play a sport

    • With Friends:
Play games like duck duck goose or hopscotch
Take a ballet or swimming class

    • With Family:
      Go on a walk
Play at the park or beach
      Ride bikes

  • Limit sedentary activities to 1-2 hours per day. Consider unplugging the TV altogether and see what possibilities bloom.

  • Make increasing physical activity a family affair.
