Keeping Your Kids Well
What You Can Do as a Family
-
Hand washing with soap and
water is the single most effective way to
prevent the spread of illness. Plain soap
works well - as does antibacterial, it is
important to soap up a good lather and lift
those germs up off the skin and rinse them
down the drain.
-
Wash
hands before meals and snacks, after going
to the bathroom and changing diapers, and
after blowing your nose or coughing
-
Teach your
children that it's not appropriate to share
cups, straws, and silverware at home or at
day care
-
Keeping kids
well includes eating well ~ "5 a day" :
Five servings of fruit and veggies daily may
seem like a lot to a picky eater but this
can include juices, carrot slices,
applesauce.
-
Fluids are
important. Very little children need to get
a lot of their calories from milk-breast or
bottle-but also need water and as they get
older offer juice.
-
Being
overtired stresses the immune system, so
make sure your child gets plenty of rest in
addition to eating well.
-
Secondhand
smoke weakens your child's defenses and sets
them up for infections
If you must smoke do not smoke in the hours
or other enclosed space, like the car or
boat.
-
If your child
is ill, try your best to keep him or her
home. This can be difficult for working
parents, so be sure to have a support system
in place for family members, caregivers, and
others you can rely on to help you and your
child if you must go to work.
