Parenting Large Kids
What You Can Do as a Parent

  • Provide your child with lots of love & attention...resist pressuring your child to
    lose weight.

  • Let your child develop the weight that's "right" for her...often children grow into their weight. Children resemble biological relatives with respect to size & shape. There is no way to "select" which relative a child will look like.

  • Avoid feeding your child unnecessarily, for example: comforting your child with
a cookie when she skins her knee or giving soda/juice for thirst between meals.

  • Maintain a positive feeding relationship. Let your child decide how much to eat...don't limit the amount of food a child can eat, or make a child "clean" her plate.

  • Encourage your child to be more active by:

~ Playing with balls, Frisbees, jump ropes, tricycles/bicycles, hula hoops,
    hackey sacks.

~ Taking family outings that include hiking, swimming or going to parks and playgrounds.

~ Keep a close eye on TV watching, computer & video games use.

Don't compare children on the basis of size video games use.
