Protecting Children From Child Abuse
What You Can Do as a Parent

  • When you are feeling stressed or out of control, leave the situation if you can. Calm down and get quiet. If you can't leave the situation, then mentally step back and count to ten

  • Take time for yourself and relax. Take time for exercise, reading, taking a walk or praying

  • Be kind but firm in your discipline. Get down on your child's eye level, make eye contact, touch him/her gently and tell him in a short, kind but firm phrase what you want him/her to do

  • Give your child choices. For example, if your child is playing with her food, ask:
"would you like to stop playing with your food, or would you like to leave the table?"

  • Phone a friend

  • If someone can watch the children, go outside and take a walk

  • Turn on some music

  • Take a hot bath or splash cold water on your face

  • Put your child in a time out area or chair
