Teaching Children About Television
What You Can Do as a Family

  • Plan your family viewing. Give your child(ren) a choice of what to watch-within certain guidelines.

  • Move the TV to a room that is not the center of family life. Limit children's viewing to one or two hours a day.

  • Offer your child(ren) other options. Play games, read books, or give other opportunities to be active and creative.

  • Watch TV with your child(ren) and talk about the programs you view together. Talk about how you disapprove of a character's violent acts and when you think there are better ways to resolve problems.

  • Make a family video and watch it together on TV. Try making a vido of you reading a book to your child(ren).

  • Be aware of yourself as a role model. Try to limit your own TV viewing and talk to your family about why you are choosing to watch specific programs.

  • Set out a jigsaw puzzle on a tabletop where it can be left for several days. Family can turn to the puzzle rather than the TV for filling free time.

  • Talk to your child about the difference between movies, TVfont>

  • Talk to your child about the difference between movies, TV and real life.
